Is This Mix Hack, Considered CHEATING?

Getting your mix to match the clarity and balance of a professional reference track can be tricky. But with the right technique, you can pinpoint exactly where your track differs and make precise adjustments.
In this video, I’ll show you a game-changing method using FabFilter Pro-MB to compare your mix against a reference track—across four distinct frequency bands—so you can dial in the perfect balance.
Why Use FabFilter Pro-MB for A/B Referencing?
FabFilter Pro-MB is a powerful multiband compressor, but in this case, we’re using it not for compression—but as a frequency band splitter to analyze how your mix compares to a pro track.
✅ Breaks down your mix into 4 key frequency bands
✅ Allows you to A/B test between your track and a reference with precision
✅ Pinpoints level differences in each frequency range so you can make better mix decisions
This technique ensures you’re not just guessing—you’ll hear exactly where your mix falls short.
How to Set Up the A/B Multiband Trick
Step 1: Load FabFilter Pro-MB and Set Up 4 Bands
First, insert FabFilter Pro-MB on your master bus. Create four bands covering key frequency areas:
- Sub & Low End (20Hz - 150Hz)
- Low Mids (150Hz - 800Hz)
- High Mids (800Hz - 4kHz)
- Top End (4kHz - 20kHz)
This allows you to isolate specific areas of your mix for direct comparison.
Step 2: Solo Each Band and A/B with Your Reference
Next, solo one frequency band at a time, then quickly switch between your mix and your reference track.
- Are your lows as tight and full as the reference?
- Do your mids sound muddy or too thin in comparison?
- Is your top end crisp and balanced or lacking presence?
By breaking it down this way, you can hear the differences in more precise sections, rather than trying to judge the entire mix at once.
Step 3: Adjust Levels for a More Balanced Mix
Once you identify level differences in each band, tweak your mix accordingly.
- Boost or cut EQ to match the reference's tone
- Adjust compression to tighten up dynamics
- Ensure your levels are sitting right before final mastering
